Hi everyone, it’s been almost 5 months since my previous article was out. I have been a bit more busy with my work and then came a big change in my professional life (will put out a separate article about it).

So, now I am back with 5 tips which I think will help you in planning your job search and interviews.

1. Research About The Company

Many people might think that you should research about the company before interview. But, I believe that only if you research about the company and know about its products, work culture, etc., only then you can decide if you want to work for the company or not.

Imagine if you know nothing about what Google does, will you apply just like that. Probably not.

The same thing applies to any company as well. So, first research about the company. You need to know about the whole history about the company. But you should at-least know what the company does.

2. Read The Job Description

When you find a job title that you think is suitable for you, then don’t apply immediately. First go and read the job description.

Almost always the chances of you getting shortlisted for a job are based on the details present in the job description only. Because every recruiter will have their own requirements right?

Like,

  • what are the expectations
  • what will you do once you join the company
  • what are the basic/mandatory requirements
  • what are the preferred qualifications

Then decide if you might be an ideal candidate for that job or not.

3. Tweak Your Resume

Now, since you know what the recruiter is looking for in a candidate’s application, first check if your resume has the relevant keywords or not.

If you don’t have the relevant keywords then add them to your resume. If you don’t know what keywords you need to add, then go to the job description and pick the keywords from there.

Only add the keywords to your resume if you have knowledge/experience working with those technologies.

Do not put keywords if you don’t know them. Don’t try to cheat 😉.

4. Maintain A List Of Applied Jobs

Now, after you have tweaked your resume according to the job description and applied for the job, the next thing you can do is maintain a list of all the applied jobs along with their statuses.

I know you might be listening about this for the first time, but this will help you a lot.

Maintain a list of all the applied jobs with the below information:

  • Job Title
  • Company Name
  • Job URL (link)
  • Application Status (applied, shortlisted, etc.,)

You can use a simple Google Spreadsheet or Microsoft Excel or any application like Trello.

By maintaining a list like this, you can view all of your applications at one place, know how much time your application was in various stages etc.,

Sometimes, you may feel low if you have too many applications in applied/pending stage. But, keep faith in you. It takes a bit of time for something good to happen.

5. Schedule Your Interviews Effectively

When you receive information that you are shortlisted for the interview from company A, then before confirming your availability, first do one thing.

Go and check your calendar, if you have any other interviews already scheduled for that day. If yes, then check on which day you are free and ask your recruiter from company A if they can schedule the interview on that alternate day.

Recruiters are super friendly and most of the time they try to reschedule the interview date according to the availability of the candidate and the interviewer.

Giving interviews is not easy and requires a lot of mental concentration. So, having adequate amount of time between the interviews will help you to refresh and be prepared for the next interview.

If you are applying for a lot jobs and are not getting interviews, DON’T STOP KEEP TRYING.

According to some study, it takes an average of 27 applications to land a single interview.
